This past week I gave you a polished fossil to figure out. What was it and where was it from?
You immediately came back with Archaeocyathids from the Cambrian period, and I might agree ... EXCEPT! My sources at the UC Museum of Paleontology told me that this is Permian coral. Oh boy!
Well, there is certainly nothing we love more at the NCSE offices than a little controversy, and personally I love a good mystery. Anyone care to double down on their reasoning? What makes you think Archaeocyathids? Could it be a Rugosa coral? Look at some pictures and let me know what you think.
Answer Monday is quickly going to devolve into Mystery Monday, then Teaser Tuesday ... Wondering Wednesday ...
In the meantime, I'll be heading over to the American Geophysical Union meeting this week in San Francisco, where vendors will be hawking all sorts of paleo items from ammonite earrings to T. rex teeth. Personally I'm against the selling of fossils into private collections, but that certainly won't keep me from taking lots of pictures for future Fossil Fridays.
