House Bill 4157 would amend the Texas Education Code to add "the long-term problem of human-caused climate change and its effects" as well as "bioregionalism" to the topics to be covered in each school district's required science curriculum.
Texas was one of just six states to receive the grade of F for the treatment of climate change in its state science standards in "Making the Grade? How State Public School Science Standards Address Climate Change," a recent report issued by NCSE and the Texas Freedom Network Education Fund, although subsequent revisions to the standards in 2020 resulted in minor improvements, as NCSE previously reported.
House Bill 4157 was introduced by James Talarico (D-District 52) — a former public school teacher — on March 13, 2021, and referred to the House Committee on Public Education on March 29, 2021.
