A provision in Indiana's Senate Bill 373 that would have allowed public school districts to "require the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life, including creation science" was removed from the bill by the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development before it voted, 8-2, to pass the bill on February 20, 2019.
As NCSE previously reported, the sponsor of the bill, Dennis Kruse (R-District 14), has a long history of sponsoring bills that would similarly allow public school districts to require the teaching of creation science, although its teaching has repeatedly been ruled unconstitutional by the federal courts.
A similar bill in South Carolina, House Bill 3826, which would allow public school districts to "require the teaching of various theories concerning the origin of life, including creation science" in elective courses on religion, is currently with the House Committee on Education and Public Works there.
