NCSE's Director of Teacher Support Lin Andrews was featured in Robin Marantz Henig's "To End This Pandemic, We Must Trust Science," published (paywalled) in the November 2020 issue of National Geographic.
Discussing what she described as "anti-science sentiment" during the COVID-19 pandemic, Henig wrote, "Maybe the pandemic will persuade even the skeptics how crucial scientific discovery is to human flourishing. That's the hope of Lin Andrews, director of teacher support at the National Center for Science Education."
NCSE's new five-part lesson plan on the nature of science uses examples from the history of epidemiology to illuminate not only the ways in which science works but also (as Andrews explained) "all these stumbles that were made along the way." The first two lessons have already been posted on the Supporting Teachers section of NCSE's website.
"I'd like to believe Andrews is right about this being a teachable moment," Henig mused toward the end of her article: "maybe not so much for those of us already fixed in our views, but for those whose childhood is being shaped by the coronavirus."
