NCSE's Deputy Director Glenn Branch contributed "More Light Than Heat: The Importance of Education in Coping with Climate Change" to the spring 2003 of The Humanist, the quarterly magazine of the American Humanist Association.
Noting that public support for climate change education is high according to survey research, Branch observed that nevertheless, "individual willingness to express support for climate change education to a pollster is not easily translatable into social resolve to provide adequate climate change education in the formal educational system."
The article reviewed the challenges to climate change education in the United States, based in part on cognitive, emotional, and ideological obstacles to individual understanding and acceptance of climate change, and in part on systemic barriers owing to ideology and inertia. In closing, Branch urged humanists to focus on climate change education in particular.
Accompanying the article were a sidebar describing NCSE's own lesson sets on climate change and a sidebar with suggestions for further reading on climate change education. Branch will also be speaking on climate change education at the AHA's 2023 conference.
