Sixty-six million years ago, an asteroid some 10 kilometers across slammed into the Earth, leaving a geologic wound over 80 kilometers in diameter, according to science writer Riley Black in her book, The Last Days of the Dinosaurs. Approximately 75 percent of known species vanished. Yet many life forms managed to survive the catastrophe, from feathered dinosaurs to our primate ancestors.
As part of Darwin Day 2024, NCSE and the National Association of Biology Teachers hosted a webinar featuring Black, who discussed what made the difference between survival and extinction as the Age of Dinosaurs ended and the Age of Mammals began.
