The next generation of scientists needs a diverse arsenal of science communication skills to work in communities that lack exposure to, and may be skeptical of, science. To be successful in science outreach, scientists need to learn how to lower the barrier of entry by making science relevant, engaging, and accessible. To that end, we’ve launched the NCSE Graduate Student Fellowship, a year-long course for six graduate students who work in areas of the country that are underserved when it comes to science. Over the course of the year, the Graduate Student Fellows will focus on informal education pedagogy, science communication, and outreach using hands-on activities they develop based on their own research. By the end of the course, the fellows will be equipped to provide effective community-based science throughout their careers.
